In the beginning of the XIVe century, when the County of Flanders was under the rule of the French crown, a violent revolt broke out in Western Flanders. The film starts when leading French nobels arrive to convince the recalcitrant, old Count of Flanders to go to the French court, to beg forgiveness of King Philip the Fair. The brother of the King, the Count of Valois, personally guarantees that the old Count will be dealt with chivalrously. Over the protests of his son, Robert of Béthune (nicknamed "The Lion of Flanders"), the Count of Flanders leaves for Compiègne.
There, however, he and all his nobles are arrested by the King, who is under the baneful influence of his develish wife, Jeanne of Navarre. When King Philip arrives in Bruges shortly thereafter, he is given a cold reception by the inhabitants. In addition, his wife is publicly affronted by the arrogant beauty of Machteld, the daughter of Robert de Béthune. In
her anger, the Queen has the girl kidnapped by her nephew, the infamous Jacques de Châtillon, who is then promptly named governor of Flanders. In Flanders, the unrest of the population is cunningly inflamed by the old dean of the weavers, the eloquent Pieter de Coninck. The energetic Jan Breydel adds fuel to the fire. Thus, plans are made to bring the imprisoned Robert of Béthune back to his country in secret, in order to prepare for the revolt against France. On the way to Flanders, in the disguise of an errant knight, Robert meets the kidnappers of his daughter Machteld. The Lion of Flanders takes bloody revenge for the attack on his child. The Flemish rebels flee from Bruges because of the reign of terror introduced by Jacques de Châtillon, and the French soldiers and the followers of the French crown assault the families which remain behind, and Jan Breydel's mother, little brother and sister are brutally assaulted and murdered.
This is the ill-fated spark that is needed to ignite the Flemish revolt. Bruges is recaptured at night; the occupiers are defeated and the Flemish celebrate their triumph on the Market Place. Incenses by this open rebellion, Philip the Fair masses the largest army seen up to that time and sends it to Flanders to munish it. The Flemish waylay the French near
Kortrijk on the groeninge-downs.
The merciless battle of archers, foot soldiers and cavalry threatens to turn against the Flemish, when suddenly a miraculous Golden Knight appears, who rallies the exhausted Flemish camp and leads it to victory, the glorious victory of the Golden Spurs.
