The History behind the Ants Go Marching Rhyme - As with many modern children’s songs, the original lyrics to the “Ants go marching” song may have been anything but a nursery rhyme. In fact, according to sound historical evidence, the ants go marching rhyme has its origin in an African spiritual called “When Johnny comes marching home” that became popular during the American civil war
Sharing some common melodic aspects with a still older Irish song known as “Johnny I hardly knew ye” (1820), the song “When Johnny comes marching home” can be traced back to 1863.
The meaning of the song makes an obvious reference to people’s longing for the return of family and friends from war. This is why it was widely used during the civil war by both sides as a motivation song.
